Blandings Turtle Classroom Action
Hiilside has been deeply committed to conservation since its early days. In the fall of 2014, Science teacher Hank Bryant put a focus on environmental conservationfor the Fifth and Sixth Graders, and Emilie Schuler of the Grassroots Wildlife Conservation led the kickoff of the “Headstart” program for endangered Blanding’s Turtles. The goal is to nurture and then release two of these tiny (at birth) rare turtles while offering the students the chance to learn about field conservation and make a real-world contribution to society. Here Emilie explains how the program works and the importance of their conservation opportunity before letting them meet Squirtle and Franklin.
