Kents Hill School is at a pivotal moment in its almost 200-year-old history. Our Head of School has brought a clear educational vision and a strengthened focus on developing the whole student through a balanced, intentional, and purposeful curriculum. Under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the overall day-to-day management of the school's financial reporting systems, including the general ledger system, cash receipts, cash disbursements, cash management, accounts payable, student accounts and accounts receivable/student bank functions.  This position is integral in helping maintain the financial integrity of the school, and requires good organizational skills, a high level of accounting knowledge and experience, supervisory and management skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.  The Controller needs to be a hands-on person who can work effectively both collaboratively and independently in an academic environment. 


  • Oversee the general ledger, proper non-profit accounting and assures timely and accurate financial information and reporting
  • Prepare monthly internal financial statements
  • Manage the month end close process, including all reconciliations and closing entries
  • Work with Chief Financial Officer in preparing and maintaining annual budgets
  • Review and distribute month end departmental budget reports
  • Lead the annual audit, preparing information for year-end audit, financial statement preparation and tax filing.
  • Oversee gift reporting including all contributions, pledges, endowment, and other gifts given to the school.  Assure proper use of endowment funds. Restricted and Endowment Fund spreadsheets
  • Administrator of corporate credit card program
  • Administrator of Treasury Services including positive pay, wires and ACH
  • Accounts Receivable for rentals, athletics
  • Administrator for ODIN, Student Bank, Deposits, Withdrawals, Charges, reconciliations
  • Accounts Payable review, account coding
  • Assist with student tuition billing and AR balance reconciliation
  • Fixed Assets accounting and tracking
  • Prepare and file annual 1099 forms
  • External reporting as required
  • Member (ex-Officio) of finance, plant and facilities and audit committees of the board of trustees
  • Support the work of the Chief Financial Officer
  • Other tasks as assigned or needed



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an accounting office with knowledge of GAAP and non-profit accounting preferred
  • Knowledge of financial information technology applications (Blackbaud, ODIN)
  • Management or supervisor experience preferred
