With an ambitious strategic vision, Solomon Schechter Day School is looking for a talented individual to help the school articulate and implement a uniquely compelling approach to learning and teaching. The Director of Learning and Teaching will work collaboratively with the professional leadership team and faculty members to formulate and execute a vision for our academic experience that will help make the institution be a school of choice for families seeking an outstanding 21st century education for their children. This is a unique career opportunity for an experienced educator eager to work in a mission driven environment to foster transformational change at Schechter and in the field of Jewish day schools. The Director of Learning and Teaching is a key member of the Hanhallah (leadership team), reporting directly to the Head of School and working closely with the principals, instructional coaches, learning specialists, counselors, faculty members and staff. This is a full year (12 month) position.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as the architect by creating a shared vision among faculty about the pedagogical and curricular approach to learning and teaching at Schechter including but not limited to the formation and implementation of a holistic and comprehensive scope and sequence curriculum by discipline, the articulated goals and integration points by grade, and approaches to learning/dispositions that act as throughlines connecting the student experience
  • Championing a culture of reflective practice and teacher leadership throughout the school - directing the school’s approach to professional development for faculty and establishing high functioning pedagogic leadership structures embedded throughout the school
  • In partnership with the principals, developing and implementing the school’s approach to supervision and evaluation of faculty and a comprehensive plan for the onboarding and ongoing mentorship of new faculty
  • In partnership with faculty, instructional coaches and learning specialists, creating a shared vision on measuring student outcomes
  • Managing the administration and the collection of data gained from standardized and other assessment tools; leading our faculty and administrators in interpreting and using this data to inform instruction and continuously evaluating our school program
  • Managing the school’s approach to support services - how students are identified and qualify for services, how services are administered and the ways in which we monitor student progress
  • Keeping abreast of educational developments in the independent, public school, national and state systems, passionate about keeping the school up-to-date in the latest educational issues by attending courses and conferences with colleagues
  • Spearheading the AISNE re-accreditation process for the school
  • Leading by example and promoting high standards in the delivery of the curriculum
  • Writing and implementing all academic policies (in collaboration with the principals and faculty) including Schechter’s unique approach to teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment, grading, homework, progress reports, support services and enrichment
  • Designing and managing a learning and teaching organizational structure in line with the strategic direction of the school and deploying resources accordingly
  • Directly supervising the instructional coaches, learning specialists and counselors

  • A deep belief in the inclusion model and being able to reach all types of learners
  • Comfort and engagement with the field of Judaic studies--in particular Hebrew and/or Jewish texts--preferred or the willingness to enthusiastically learn
  • Change management - experience creating and implementing change in an institution with sensitivity towards pace and establishing shared ownership and adoption
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, specifically the ability to articulate expectations clearly and compassionately while prioritizing transparency
  • Passionate about children and education

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Education
  • At least 7-10 years of experience in the field of education
  • Experience working in elementary and middle school settings preferred
  • Curricular and pedagogical education/experience required
  • Instructional leadership experience required
  • Computer literacy, specifically proficient in Google and Microsoft suite products
