Park’s Academic Support Department provides support to students with academic, organizational, and attentional challenges. These services are meant to address students' specific learning needs and help them meet classroom goals. We are seeking a committed, enthusiastic, and experienced Learning Specialist, with a focus in Math, to join our Academic Support team. This position is fee for service, benefits eligible, and requires the ability to be scheduled 4 days per week. Some before school and/or after school times may be included.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide one to one support for students with learning challenges that impact math learning. Caseload will consist primarily of students in Grades 4-8, including prealgebra and algebra in grades 7 and 8. Caseload will include 18- 24 sessions per week.
- Support students on caseload in the development of necessary organizational and executive function skills that will help them be successful across academic areas.
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, Academic Support Head, and other educators to identify student needs and instructional strategies that can address these needs.
- Interpret neuropsychological reports and determine instructional implications of these findings for individual support and classroom math instruction.
- Write goals for each student reflecting both classroom and individual math skills goals.
- Communicate effectively with parents about student needs and progress; enlist parents as partners in supporting student growth; guide them in supporting students’ math growth at home.
- Write student progress reports up to 3 times each academic year.
- Attend one Academic Support Department meeting per week, parent conferences twice a year, and team/child study meetings as appropriate for caseload.
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
- Minimum of three years experience teaching and/or tutoring middle school students with math learning challenges including supporting students in algebra and pre-algebra studies.
- Demonstrated understanding of specific learning challenges that can impact student learning of math in particular, knowledge of how to address these challenges in order to support achievement, and ability to communicate these challenges and strategies to teachers and parents
- Demonstrated repertoire of strategies, methods, and materials for teaching math to students at the K-8 level who need supplemental and/or alternative approaches to be successful.
- Understanding of Investigations Curriculum and familiarity with other math curricula at the K-8 level.
- Experience supporting students’ development of executive function and organizational skills across academic areas at the middle school level.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and students to support learning.
- Experience providing both “pull out” and “push in” support.
- Experience with both in person and remote math instruction/math support.
- Current knowledge of technological supports for math learning.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing support to students and families from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Demonstrated interest in ongoing professional development and innovative practices that support student growth.
