For over one hundred years, Shady Hill, a school of 521 students (PK-VIII) and 90 faculty, has been a leader in progressive elementary education. Grades B-II pursue a variety of Thematic Studies that reflect the Central Subject Methodology by integrating areas of learning, but in shorter, age appropriate units. Grades 3-8 engage in Central Subject, an in-depth, integrated study of a particular time or people in history. The year-long Central Subject study, which emphasizes strong content, the use of primary sources, understanding of multiple perspectives, acquisition of essential skills, and self-discovery, forms the core of our curriculum. Central Subject faculty are responsible for the skills and content in both social studies/history and language arts and with the support of performing arts and visual arts faculty, the integration of these disciplines.

Shady Hill School is also a teacher training institution.  Its long-standing Teacher Training Course, which brings as many as eighteen apprentice teachers to campus each year, prepares talented aspiring teachers for careers in education and allows each faculty member the opportunity to be a mentor and meaningful contributor to the teaching field.  Because of the school’s commitment to teacher training, the school often seeks teachers with certification.

Basic Purpose: The Lower School Learning Resources Director oversees academic support services for Lower School students, and advises and collaborates with administrators, faculty and parents on student progress and evaluation recommendations.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support Lower School Faculty and Students
    • Coach, advise, and support faculty on best practice teaching strategies
    • Meet with teachers to discuss students' learning profile and accommodations
    • Attend grade-level individuals meetings on students
    • Attend parent conferences on student progress (as needed) 
    • Visit classrooms and conduct observations of students and teachers as needed
    • Provide additional small group student support
    • Manage Assessments and Student Plans
    • Conduct internal assessments as necessary
    • Coordinate external formal evaluations with families and evaluators
    • Organize resources to meet individual student needs 
    • Determine Support Plans
    • Oversee the implementation of grade-wide reading assessments
    • Administer the DIAL assessments in Beginners
    • Manage student database with assessment data and learning accommodations
    • Coordinate related services such as speech and language and occupational therapy 
    • Oversee the administration of ERB assessments and analyze the results
    • Collaborate with the IT department to provide assistive technology to students with accommodations
  • Manage Learning Resources Staff
    • Oversee supervision, evaluation, and professional development of learning resources staff
    • Plan and facilitate Learning Resources department meetings
    • Monitor student progress in tutoring and small group 
    • Meet regularly with reading and learning specialists
    • Oversee and edit reading reports and tutoring reports (3x year)
    • Manage tutoring contracts and payroll
  • Serve as the Lower School Learning Resources Department spokesperson
    • Support parents and address concerns as they arise
    • Connect parents to the Learning Resources mission
    • Educate parents on topics related to child development, neurodiversity, academic and social/emotional learning
    • Serve on committees as needed
    • Provide guidance during grade level sectioning meeting
  •  Leadership
    • Serve as a member of the LS administration team
    • Meet and plan with the LS Division Head, LS Math Curriculum Coordinator, LS Faculty Coach, School Psychologist, MS Learning Resources Director
    • Collaborate with the Division Head to oversee the reading curriculum
    •  Assist Director of Admission with aspects of Lower School admissions including screenings of applicants, training screeners, parent admission meetings as needed, reading LS admission

   Qualifications:

  •  3+ years of lower school classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education and/or Moderate Learning Disabilities preferred
  • Experience in administrating, analyzing, and interpreting formal and informal assessments of learning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
