BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

The faculty member will be responsible for developing, planning and teaching geology, biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and sustainability classes to students in grades six, seven, eight and nine.  The teacher will coordinate and administer effective and timely assessments of students’ learning and prepare reports of same. 

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Using present curriculum maps and course materials, and plans to teach a cohesive and sequential science curriculum, including extensive hands-on work in the lab
  • Developing new curricula and updating maps accordingly
  • Developing, planning and teaching study skills
  • Assessing and reporting on student progress using checklists, grades, comments and parent conferences
  • Communicating effectively and sensitively with parents
  • Communicating effectively and collaboratively with fellow faculty and administration on student progress and concerns
  • Attending and participating in faculty meetings and other school committee responsibilities
  • Acting as Advisor for a group of between 9-12 students (1 period/week)
  • Providing two Enrichment or Extra Help periods per week
  • Acting as a coach or assistant coach for four (4) class periods/week for a minimum of two out of the three available sports seasons
  • Non-teaching responsibilities as part of the team may include but are not limited to:
    • Lunch table supervision
    • Recess supervision
    • Study Hall supervision
    • Morning Hallway supervision
    • Afternoon Bus line supervision
    • Afternoon Car Pool supervision

 

REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics or earth sciences
  • 5+ years of teaching experience
  • Demonstrated respect for children and different learning styles
  • Demonstrated skill in developing curricula and balancing published materials with individually, personally created curricula
  • Demonstrated familiarity with current “best practices” in education
  • Demonstrated skills in working effectively and collaboratively as a team player
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Applewild has been a cherished community institution since 1957 and we use our broad programmatic and cultural roots to continuously evolve our programs to offer a compelling and relevant education. Our main campus in Fitchburg, Massachusetts is approximately one hour west of Boston and offers preschool through 9th grade, as well as a small junior boarding program for students in grades 5-9.  Our innovative “Prospect Studio” 8-9th grade program offers an interdisciplinary intellectual adventure centered around the theme “Urban Renewal, Placemaking, & Social Justice”.
