School One, a small, independent high school on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island, seeks a full-time special education coordinator.  The coordinator is responsible for between 10-15 special education students per year.   The position involves teaching resource classes, coordinating and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), liaising with school districts, communicating with parents, and working with faculty to implement best practices for students with learning differences. 

Founded in 1973, School One enrolls up to 100 students in an arts-intensive, college preparatory, progressive program.  The school is highly personalized, characterized by small classes, nurturing relationships among staff members and students, and an emphasis on respect for individual differences.  School One also provides an integrative model for students with mild to moderate special education needs, spanning both learning and behavioral challenges.  Our special education students have mild to moderate special needs including students on the autism spectrum, dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and/or medical conditions.

Major responsibilities for the special education coordinator include:

  • Teach resource classes to provide special education students with strategies for mastering a range high school subjects.
  • Serve as academic advisor to 6-8 students.  Major advising duties include regular communication with students and parents, course selection, goal-setting and long range planning and advocacy for the students.
  • Develop and implement IEPs for district-placed special education students.
  • Provide ongoing consultation and professional development to faculty on learning differences and on approaches more likely to succeed with specific students. 
  • Work with School One’s social worker to coordinate students’ social and emotional needs. 
  • Coordinate and implement record-keeping, including IEPs, student files, program compliance and communications with school districts.
  • Coordinate testing accommodations with the College Board and administer required state tests to select students. 
  • Participate in admissions and outreach by conducting interviews, connecting with prospective students, assessing students’ appropriateness, and helping market special education services. 
  • Take charge of some school activities and pitch in on the others.
  • Teach a once-a-week physical education class (can be very low impact)
  • Work continually to improve one's practice.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree plus Rhode Island certification in secondary special education.  Ideal candidate would also possess a special education administrator’s endorsement. Other desirable qualities include creativity, sense of humor, fondness for adolescents and their quirks, backbone, a collaborative stance, and strong organizational and communication skills.
