About This Cohort
The role of a diversity, equity, and inclusion practitioner in an independent school is dynamic and multifaceted. DEI practitioners engage with every school constituent -- including students, families, faculty and staff, and trustees -- to plan and execute strategies that create organizational change.
In this cohort, designed for DEI practitioners who are new to the role, you will learn alongside your peers through topic presentations, case studies, discussions, and peer problem solving. You will walk away with a strategy for action during your first year on the job.

About Our Facilitators
Heather Flewelling is Chief Talent Officer at Carney Sandoe & Associates. As a deeply committed and experienced leader in the field of education, Heather has devoted her career to developing learning cultures that promote diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion as a way of life. Her professional experience is rich and diverse, having worked with independent schools, higher education, and in the nonprofit sector. Heather completed her 19 year tenure at Milton Academy (MA) this spring, with 15 years serving as Director of Multiculturalism and Community Development. Heather has driven diversity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives, overseen the expansion of student orientation and affinity programs, increased the faculty of color percentage, refined critical policies, partnered with human resources, and facilitated faculty development workshops. Heather also served as Director of Student Multicultural Programs and a member of the counseling staff while at Milton.
As of July, Heather Flewelling will join the Search & Consulting Group as Chief Talent Officer and Search Consultant. In addition to conducting retained searches and engaging in consulting work, Heather will focus on the recruitment of diverse candidates for their Leadership Search Practice.
Heather holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Harvard University and a master's of social welfare with a specialization in strengthening children, youth, and families from University of California, Berkeley.

Erica Pernell is Chief Equity Officer at Shady Hill School. Erica is an educator, consultant, speaker, storyteller, and organizer. Erica is passionate about working with schools and organizations seeking to create more equity, justice and inclusion by making strategic and lasting shifts.
Erica has worked in education for over 15 years as a teacher, program director, advisor, coach, and administrator. Taking a solutions-oriented approach, Erica uses a growth mindset to empower communities and institutions to examine current issues, imagine ideal outcomes and take steps to make transformation real.
Erica's work with institutions and organizations includes: NAIS' People of Color Conference; Boston University Academy; Dedham Country Day School; Enrollment Management Association; Learning Center for the Deaf; GLSEN, Association of Independent Schools of New England, Indian Mountain School, Association Montessori Internationale, Noble and Greenough School, Shady Hill School, Triumvirate Environmental and many more.
Cohort participants will receive presentation slides, case studies, sample materials, and more.
