Beginner’s Mind, Cultivating Confidence, and Moving Beyond Fake-It-Til-You-Make-It
with Carla Pugliese
Self-efficacy is a buzzy word in education, and with good reason. Helping our students achieve trust in their own abilities and the confidence to problem solve is paramount to the teaching practice. But what about our own self-efficacy? How do we develop confidence as teachers and own our professional development as an essential and on-going process – especially when it might feel like we’re treading water in the deep end and all eyes are on us? Most importantly, how do we do it without losing authenticity or feeling like we have to pretend? In this hour, we’ll practice cultivating strategies, habits and mindsets that allow you to embrace continuous growth without shame.
- Where do I derive my confidence from, in the classroom?
- Am I affording myself the same supports I extend to my students? Am I holding myself to the same standards?
- What have I not mastered...yet?
Beginner Teachers are matched with Mentor Teachers, where possible by classroom subject matter concentration, for a vibrant afternoon facilitated by Shalini Rao and Carol Pugliese.

Her experience as a middle and high school teacher, middle school administrator, and social-emotional learning specialist, as well as her studies in mediation, meditation, and mindfulness, led her to build Beyond Delta Learning Group and develop the Beyond Delta method as a way to bring social-emotional skills to bear on vital – and often difficult – institutional, societal, and cultural initiatives. She is an alumna of Stanford University and Columbia University’s Teacher’s College.
